30...Going on 12???

At the end of this year, I'll be celebrating the big 3-0. I'm not sure that I'm quite ready to be in my 30's, but it doesn't really matter because it's inevitable. There are so many things that I have done in my 20's that I'm happy about and in other ways, I thought I would have done more. I've heard people say that the 30's are fantastic. I hope that I can say the same.

I have noticed over the last 6 months that I have had a real problem with breakouts on my forehead. What the heck is that all about? Nobody ever told me to expect that at my age! Sure, I occasionally get a pimple here or there, but a full on breakout??? I brought it up to my mom today when I was at her house and she casually responded with, "Oh yeah. It happens." WHAT??? I've been told by a few people that I have really nice skin and yet recently I feel like my skin is exactly the way it was back in junior high. I also have very fair and sensitive skin so finding products to use on my face is not always an easy (or affordable!) task. I guess I'm going to have to get a bit more diligent in my search for successful products.

So, my readers...I ask you...is there anything else I should know about?

Oh god Kirsti....I could write a small book on this...and I most likely will in your comments !!

Dinner is almost ready, but I am going to get back to you on this over the weekend. I turn 40 next year, so the thirties are slowly saying goodbye to me.

Well, I definitely can't wait to read your book, er, response. =)

Oh...and congratulations on your school news! That's awesome. I read your comment on Lance's blog. I bet you're so excited!

Eating right and cutting 'way back on caffeine consumption made a big improvement in my skin (among other things). But everybody is different, so you'll have to find what works for you.

Thanks Wee!

Caffeine is already pretty much out of my diet. I definitely could stand to make some other changes to my diet, though.

I wonder if some new meds are also contributing to my breakouts, although I'm sure that's not the only factor. I started them roughly 4 months ago. I'll have to ask my doctor.

Hmmm...

I'm finally getting back to this....sorry it took me so long.

I have no idea if you will experience any or all of these things in your 30's, but let me relate my experience to you and give you what advice I can. Of course, I hope your 30's are full of nothing but health and happiness! ( And a brand new DSLR !!!)

In my early 30's I started to experience problems with my thyroid. It slowed down and hypothyroidism can cause a lot of problems. I think that keeping a regular check on thyroid levels is a good idea anyway, as an off kilter thyroid can be an underlying cause of a myriad of different symptoms.

My eye sight went to hell. I swear by the time I'm 50 I'm going to be wearing contacts like look like the bottoms of coke bottles shoved in my eyes.

My skin went crazy. I went from oily to dry to combo, back to oily...back to combo....dry....

My periods went off schedule, my hormones started to fluctuate a bit. Can we say severe PMS?

It's good to see you don't use caffeine, I haven't touched it in years either.

It's also a good idea to keep all the trans fats out of your diet. Never ingest anything that has partially hydrogenated ANYTHING in it. Keep the saturated fats very, very low but never cut all the fats out of your diet completely, it's not good for you. Instead look for the healthy fats.

Stay away from herbal snake oils unless there is peer reviewed clinical evidence to back up whatever claim they are making. of women in their 30's start buying every herbal this and that on the market and spending tons on cremes and face junk that really does nothing. Look at the main ingredients and research them to see if their is any actual proof it will do anything helpful before laying out big money on expensive moisturizers, anti-aging potions and the like. Mostly, you'll find out they are high priced water and soap.

You might also start to get some gray hair. Don't freak, it happens for some sooner than others. You have beautiful hair, but don't be afraid of color if you feel like it is something that you want to do. (Don't feel pressured.)

Daily exercise is a must. This is the time in life when you need to start thinking about taking care of yourself now as much as possible so that you head off problems that might crop up later on down the road, hence the dietary advice. Add some weight bearing exercise for your bones and have your vitamin D levels checked so that you don't set your self up for thin bones when you get older.

And then there is the way my general perspectives on life started to shift as I went through my 30's. Priorities changed, and I think will continue to do so as we age. Certain friendships had to either grow or go and I started getting serious about weeding out the toxic people and relationships.

Oh, Kirsti...it's an adventure. :)

Thanks NM!

In a lot of ways, I am looking forward to the adventure. I just have to get my birthday over with and then I think I'll feel sane again.

I was actually diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 2 years ago. Actually, they caught it earlier than that but my doctor didn't feel right treating it at that time. I've been battling high blood pressure for about 6 years and one of the side effects of the thyroid meds was high blood pressure. I have been on thyroid medication for 2 years now.

Thanks for the tips on fats. Lance does about 90% of the grocery shopping and I know that he is careful about not buying things with partially hydrogenated anything in them. He is really good about eating salad almost every night and he loves all kinds of veggies. I like some but I need to get better about that.

I have also been reflecting a lot lately on the people in my life. I don't have very many friends as it is (Lance has a ton!) but I'm trying to really hold on to the good ones.

Thanks so much for all the great advice and tips! I really appreciate it!

Kirsti,

If you ever want to trade info on dealing with hypothyroidism just shoot me an email. You would not believe what I have been through trying to find the right medication and the right dose.

I've got a misanthropic streak a mile wide. I'm like you in that I don't have many friends either. Acquaintances yes, friends, no. I have a small circle of carefully -- very carefully -- chosen friends. I talk to people easily, but it takes a really long time for me to be able to say that someone is a friend. The friends I do have, though, we share everything. I don't think there is a part of our lives we don't share. Relationships like that are so rare and so precious, I wouldn't trade it for the world.
